John Edgar For Colorado's 5th

John's Platform

Promoting Good Governance

Restoring Trust and Responsibility in American Governance and Society is paramount. Before addressing the multitude of issues facing the nation, the fractured relationship between the American people and their government must be repaired. This starts with transparent governance and active engagement with constituents. As their representative, John will prioritize open communication, town halls, and listening sessions to ensure people’s voices are heard. Additionally, he’ll champion bipartisan collaboration, emphasizing common ground and shared goals over partisan divides, to effectively address the needs of the district and nation.

Defending Democracy

As a Democrat, John will vigorously defend democracy by advocating for voting rights legislation and opposing voter suppression tactics. The next Congress must certify the presidential election, and we cannot trust a Republican-controlled Congress to do so impartially. It’s crucial to flip as many House districts as possible, including Colorado’s 5th, to ensure fair elections and uphold democratic principles. John is committed to being a strong voice for democracy in Congress and will work tirelessly to protect the integrity of the electoral process.

Reproductive Freedom

John firmly believes in a woman’s right to make her own reproductive choices. In Congress, he will vehemently oppose any efforts to enact a federal ban on abortion and he views such efforts as government overreach. John will advocate for policies that protect and uphold reproductive rights, including access to safe and legal abortion services, comprehensive sex education, and affordable contraception. Additionally, he will support legislation to strengthen reproductive healthcare access and ensure that all individuals have the autonomy to make decisions about their own bodies.

Building an Economy that Works for All

John is committed to fostering economic growth in the Pikes Peak region by supporting small businesses, investing in infrastructure, and promoting workforce development initiatives. Additionally, he firmly opposes the relocation of Space Command to Alabama due to what he views as revenge and troll politics. John will work tirelessly to ensure that the region retains this vital asset, advocating for its continued presence and the preservation of jobs and opportunities it brings to the community.

Equality for LGBTQ+

John will advocate for policies that protect, uphold, and expand LGBTQ+ rights to ensure equality for all. He will work to end hate and hate-fueled crimes against the LGBTQ+ community and implement comprehensive anti-discrimination laws, support inclusive education and awareness programs, and foster a culture of acceptance and respect. Every American, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, deserves to feel safe and loved, and John will fight to ensure they can fully exercise their natural rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Care for Veterans

John plans to advocate for comprehensive support services for veterans, including mental health resources, job training programs, and accessible healthcare options tailored to their needs. Additionally, he’ll work to address systemic issues within the VA system to ensure timely and efficient delivery of benefits and services to veterans.

Infrastructure

Quality infrastructure is essential to the way of life, and making smart investments in the infrastructure of the future is crucial for economic growth and sustainability. This administration has made strides with initiatives like the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, focusing on repairing roads, bridges, and broadband networks. In the next Congress, we must build off these efforts by further investing in green infrastructure, modernizing public transportation, and expanding access to high-speed internet to ensure a prosperous future for all Americans. Moreover, ensuring that young Americans are learning in the most advanced schools in the world will equip them to compete effectively in a competitive global marketplace.

Public Education

John believes in significantly increasing the investment in education, particularly by attracting and retaining the most skilled individuals to become teachers. He supports offering universal pre-K to all 3, 4, and 5-year-olds so they are prepared to learn and succeed from day one of kindergarten. No family should have to keep their children at home because they can’t afford pre-K; every child deserves the opportunity to thrive academically, regardless of their household or zip code. By prioritizing early childhood education and supporting educators, we can ensure that all children have a strong foundation for success.

Immigration

John believes our broken immigration system stems from a government lacking in virtuous leadership, mired in troll politics and endless bickering that fails to solve the problem. We must understand who is entering the country and why, while acknowledging the nation’s history. Immigrants come here fleeing threats to their lives, yet they also see America as the Land of Opportunity, seeking to contribute and live the American dream. He is inspired by their determination and believes it’s crucial to address these realities with compassion and integrity in immigration policies.

Affordable Housing

John opposes policies that artificially lower home prices, as they unfairly impact middle-income families who are current homeowners and have invested in their homes. Instead, he proposes boosting the economy to create higher-paying jobs, cutting red tape to encourage more home construction, and removing tariffs on building components. For renters, John supports limits on rental increases for renewing tenants, especially seniors, and addressing excessive corporate ownership of housing stock to improve price stability. Please check out his detailed policy proposal, APSLASHD, for more information.

Climate Change

John is fully committed to combating the climate crisis and accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources. John brings a decades-long track record of actively supporting businesses dedicated to transforming our electric generation from dirty coal to natural gas and renewables. By embracing renewable energy solutions, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, mitigate the impacts of climate change, and create a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come. John will advocate for policies that hold industrial polluters accountable for the impact their activity inflicts on our health and environment.

Healthcare

Healthcare in America is a right. Access to quality healthcare ensures that every individual can live with dignity, maintain their well-being, and address medical concerns promptly. A society that provides universal healthcare not only fosters healthier communities but also demonstrates a commitment to the fundamental rights and dignity of each and every one of its citizens.

Alzheimer’s indiscriminately impacts millions as our population ages, we must transcend our political divides and come together to find a cure and end its devastating reach into our lives.

Student Loans

John personally understands the burden of student loans, having made monthly payments well into his 40s alongside his wife. He recognizes that this issue affects Americans of all ages, not just the young. Because student loan forgiveness would disproportionately benefit higher income earners, John believes it should be structured in a way that addresses national needs and fosters unity across communities. Furthermore, his APSLASHD program also addresses student loans and repayment in a number of ways, and he invites you to check out the proposed plan.

Social Security & Medicare

John is deeply committed to protecting and strengthening Social Security and Medicare for all Americans, especially our seniors who have worked hard and contributed to these vital programs. As part of this commitment, John advocates for necessary fixes to our tax code, which currently caps Social Security contributions at a level that disproportionately burdens middle-class families while allowing the wealthiest billionaires to contribute the same amount. John proposes changing the tax code so that Social Security contributions are made on income over $1 million annually, ensuring a fair system. We owe it to our seniors to give them the peace of mind that these essential programs will remain solvent and reliable. Additionally, we must expand and strengthen Medicare, making it available to all Americans as a fundamental right. By prioritizing the well-being and security of our seniors and all workers eyeing retirement, we can build a more inclusive and sustainable society for future generations.

Homelessness

Homelessness is not a local or regional problem, it’s a national issue that must be addressed.  Upon his election and in collaboration with the likely new Speaker of the House, Hakeem Jeffries, John will work diligently to introduce a proposal in January of 2025 to form a bipartisan commission that will investigate the causes of homelessness and produce recommendations to  alleviate and prevent the problem.  Together, we will strive to make meaningful progress in combating homelessness and improving the lives of those affected by it.
