John Edgar For Colorado's 5th

Why is John Running for Colorado's 5th?

Everything can change in an instant

On October 30, 2019, just before 2:20 pm, I buckled my then two-year-old son into his stroller for a walk to the Alamo in San Antonio, TX, for a sightseeing tour. Minutes later, I found myself on the ground, frantically rising up and rushing towards the mangled metal that used to resemble a stroller. My son and I had been hit by a pickup truck driven by a distracted, uninsured driver. Lying in that intersection, my tears were not from the pain of multiple fractures but from the certainty that my son had just suffered a fatal impact to his head. Miraculously, the truck narrowly missed direct impact with the back of his head. I wasn’t as lucky.  After the initial impact of the truck’s bumper to my side, my upper body and head were smashed into the hood.  When the driver slammed on the brakes I flew through the air, my trajectory only halted by the city pavement. I would go on to require hours of surgery and would be mostly bedridden for the next 76 days.

Most pedestrians do not survive collisions with pickup trucks. We beat the odds that day. The fragility of life became clearer than ever.  The trauma of that day combined with the lingering scars and physical challenges have become a constant reminder of how quickly everything can be taken away without notice or time to prepare.

A Tragic Day For America

Another tragic event occurred in another American city just over a year later. On January 6, 2021, we witnessed an attack on our nation’s Capitol inspired by a man who prioritized his grip on his government job over the power of “We the People.” The assault was carried out by individuals who pledged their allegiance to a person rather than to their country. Unfortunately, unless change is made, events like January 6 will happen again because a once-great American political party has failed to condemn the events of that day or its chief architect.

Democracy in America and our very existence are equally fragile; neither is guaranteed, and both are worth fighting for. After my son and I survived that collision in 2019, I gained a sense of purpose to serve something far more significant than myself. I commit to working tirelessly to earn your vote. Then, starting in 2025, I will dedicate myself to safeguarding your democracy and representing each of you with virtue and integrity.
